Hi friends,
I’ve realised lately that sometimes my best writing comes from letting the words flow and spill out — stream of consciousness. So here it goes.
I've noticed the ‘feminine urge to try everything’ going viral on socials lately.
If you haven't seen it, the trend allows people to showcase their various hobbies and interests.
I think it speaks to many people because now, with so much access to information and technology, many of us can dream and realistically posit how we can do all the things, not just some. We can try on different lives easily, and be all that we want to be.
And most importantly, not subjecting ourselves to and tolerating toxic things.
This urge to try things is also a compulsion to reinvent ourselves. Not to stick to whatever society has told you you have to be. I think this compulsion (at least for me) comes from a couple of things:
To feel more secure
Reinventing myself means de-risking and diversifying my skillset, interests and knowledge in order to keep up.
To me, it doesn’t mean changing who I am at my core, i.e., my core values, just to feel more secure. It simply means building skills that can change my perspective, lead to more opportunities, and help me be more self-sufficient.
Although being secure or keeping up is probably a bit of an illusion nowadays, I think the more important thing is to feel secure in your own capabilities and potential.
We are human after all — it comes down to survival.
Fulfilment predicates survival, so we’ve got to acknowledge that reinventing is a natural part of our journey to getting there.
To minimise regret
If we have the privilege and opportunity to live fuller and more fulfilled lives, it seems like a waste to not at least try to explore the possibilities.
Especially for the multi-passionate. The generalists. The ones who were not called to do one thing and one thing only.
To prove it to yourself
Sometimes, there is no other reason than just doing things for yourself.
To show up for yourself and take yourself to places that you never thought you could belong. To remind yourself that you have the capability to transform and detach from old identities.
I see reinvention as a renewal, which means that you have to let your old selves fade away.
I’m making it sound way too dramatic now. I promise it isn’t that deep.
I suggest leaning into this urge and seeing how things unfold. Remember, you can always become someone new tomorrow.
Are you in the process of reinventing yourself? How is it going?
